Introducing role play early can help your child further understand the world around them, from the doorbell ringing and taking them to the door to answer, to loading their spoon whilst feeding and show them how to eat. You might find your little one, if they are anything like my little boy, may start helping you to feed yourself too! Talking them through what is happening will help with their understanding of cause and effect.

Idea

Hide the food – place something on their tray which you are happy for them to eat (as let’s face it everything goes in their mouth so why not make it tasty) and place an opaque plastic cup over the top. Demonstrate how they find it and place the cup over the top, watch to see how your little one finds it. Great for when you need to keep your little one entertained while in their high chair. Our bib and tray kit reduces the mess whilst still allowing your little one to experiment with food, shop here.

Idea

Roll a ball down a tube or underneath something so your little one can see if it come out the other side, they will soon learn to look where the ball is coming from.

Idea

If your little one again is anything like my little boy, he loves to play with everything that’s not a toy (role modelling from us) – and I’ve heard a lot are similar, then perhaps this might work for your little one too. Create your own shaker, a non-breakable bottle of your choice with a lid that can be tightly sealed, add some rice or pasta. Show your little one how to shake it and watch them have fun, describe the noise it makes to them.

Idea

Read to your little one – Act the book and demonstrate the feelings in the book, if it’s cold act like you are shivering. If it’s a touchy-feely book explain what soft or rough or squishy feel like and encourage them to feel different textures. Similar to exploring the sense whilst eating it’s important to explore the sense whilst playing too!
