Halloween-themed messy play ideas and recipes for spooky fun!

Halloween is around the corner and whilst things are a bit different this year with sadly no trick or treating or Halloween parties, there’s all the more reason to create some spooky fun with your little ones at home with these messy play ideas and recipes. And there needn’t be a fright with the mess if you’re using your Tidy Tot bibs!

Ghoulish messy play

Grab yourself some mouldable soap and shaving foam and create a spooky spider web. This soft, foamy texture is fun for little fingers to squelch!

Hubble bubble toil and trouble with this gooey witches brew! Add some water to cornflour and some food colouring and allow it to set. Add a little water when you’re ready to use it and get ladles and scoops to have fun pouring and dishing it out to fellow witches and wizards!

Baked beans may be scary enough with the stains they can make on clothes but go ahead and embrace it this Halloween (Tidy Tot bib at the ready!). Add some spooky rats, a few spiders and you’ve soon got a whole heap of sloppy, gooey, yummy mess to play with! Jelly also works great with this – simply pop in some spiders and let them squlech!

Halloween recipes

Our friend The Children’s Nutritionist has teamed up with Annabel Karmel to create some wonderful spooky recipes which you could even get your little one to help you prepare. Here is our favourite: super cute (and healthier than they look!) Chocolate Orange Bat Bites.

Prep time: 30 mins Makes: 15-20 bats

Ingredients

160g dates

160g cashew nuts

100g raisins

2 tbsp cocoa powder

½ tsp orange extract

Decoration: Desiccated coconut, cocoa powder, chocolate sprinkles, white chocolate chips, black icing pen, Oreo Cookies

Method

  1. Measure all of the ingredients including 4 tbsp of boiling water into a food processor. Whiz together until the mixture is finely chopped and well blended.
  2. Shape into 15 to 20 balls.
  3. Roll one third into coconut, one third into cocoa powder and one third into chocolate sprinkles.
  4. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour or until firm. Make eyes out of chocolate chips and eyeballs from the black icing pen.
  5. Slice an Oreo cookie in half and scrape away the filling. Break the cookie in half to make 2 wings and insert into the side of the energy ball. Break small pieces of cookie to make the noses.

Happy Halloween folks!
